New Year's Eve Appetizer: We call this a Wonton Cigar. Inside a crisp oven-baked rolled wonton is a ground beef filling sprinkled with minced jalapeño and livened up with oregano, cumin, chili powder and sharp cheddar cheese. It’s served with a room temperature homemade salsa. If the salsa is too cold, it’s not as spicy tasting. We served this with a dark beer.

I was looking at that when I was reading your post...almost like a lumpia, which features prominently in Filipino cuisine...

Sonia, it is sort of based on a lumpia. I love lumpia by the way.

Oh and I might add that the lumpia originated in Asia so the wonton wrapper probably is quite appropriate even though lumpia is now considered a Filipino food.

Yes, they originated in China, I believe...I love them too!

I have a NC cousin married to a US Navy Career doctor who is Filipino (she is Navy also ;-) ..he taught all their kids to make lumpias and they usually bring them to the family reunions...Yum!

Oh how I wish I could come to a family reunion and just eat. It's crossed my mind several times that I'd love to be a family reunion crasher and write articles about the culture and the food but I'd need to know about those reunions in advance and we only hear of them after the fact, right?

Haha! That is too funny...This particular family is quite diverse...You would think that a family that has so many ministers would be boring and staid...nothing further from the reality...although they are all upright and decent people they are not boring...and most of them can sing and do when they get together...some are good cooks and some rely on the old potluck recipes with lots of Jell-O salads and stuff...but boring...never!

Someday I might tell you about some of the individuals..

OMIGOSh, my mother in laws family was full of ministers. Baptist ministers! No they were neither boring nor staid but full of life and laughter. I love the old church recipes too, the funeral casseroles and pies, the gelatin molds, oh all of it. Hahah and the weird cookies that tasted great be no one knew what they were! Hahha. Please do tell me about them at some point. Maybe an email journal? What fun that would be!

Most of ours are/were Methodist and Congregationalists...most of them with a wicked sense of good, (but clean), humor...LOL...many complete teetotalers ;-) - I love it when I can attend one of our family reunions...and its funny, because I might not attend one for several years, but when I do, its like I've never been away!

Risa, it's a simple yet very filling appetizer. Especially good to serve when people are drinking alcohol and so easy to prepare ahead of time! Thanks.

Thanks, Sassy. It's a good party food because it can be prepared ahead of time and keeps people somewhat sober when they are drinking. I don't like drunk people so I try to keep my guest well fed while they imbibe.
