I was discussing this with my BFF on the phone today - what is your favorite food of all time? I really had to think about this - what do you crave? You can't get enough of it?
For me it is....tied.
There is really good NY style pizza - thin crusted, drizzled with olive oil, with really good pizza sauce and not too much cheese. There is a Lobster Roll - on a New England style hot dog bun with a tiny bit of crunchy celery, a little bit of mayo, maybe a lettuce leaf - served with french fries.
I can't decide which one I love more, which one I crave more often. They are both so good and favorites since I was a little kid. I was brought up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, 4 blocks from Lenny's Pizza. Not one of the more famous pizza places - you never see it mentioned in lists of the best pizza in Brooklyn. There was no DeFara's to us. Not until I was a teenager did I know about L&B Spumoni Gardens and their fabulous Sicilian pizza. All I knew was Lenny's thin crusted pizza and I always had it with a grape drink, not grape soda. There were no toppings. No pepperoni, no mushrooms, no toppings. Just the plain pizza and zeppoles - all they sold.
When I was 12, we went on our first road trip and it was to York, ME. I don't know why my folks picked York. All it was was a motel on the beach with an attached seafood restaurant called the Captain's Table or something like that. Every day we spent on the beach and every night we went to the restaurant for seafood. One day, we took a small side trip to Kennebunkport and I had my first lobster roll. It was heavenly. Crunchy celery, soft lobster, buttery roll, OMG. Heaven.
Two memories, two fabulous things to eat.
What is your favorite food?
