The FDA has posted a very long list of the peanut butter products that have been recalled due to a Salmonella outbreak linking back to a peanut butter producing plant in Georgia.
The peanut butter recall expands into many, many other products including peanut butter and peanut paste. You should visit the FDA website for the complete/updated list.
I was personally surprised to find products from both Whole Foods and Trader Joes on the the list though thankfully, my Peanut Butter M&Ms are safe!
According to the Agricultural Inspection Reports in both 2006 and 2007 the plant linked to the peanut butter products had multiple sanitization lapses which were left unresolved. Inspectors cited several incidences in which food-contact surfaces were not properly cleaned and sanitized and as well as considerable mildew growth in the plant.
According to the original CNN article the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have counted nearly 500 cases of salmonella illnesses in 43 states from the most recent outbreak, and says the bacterial infection might have contributed to seven deaths.
