Gretchen Lee Bourquin posted this recipe for split pea soup the other day, and it sounded so good, I knew it was time for a pot of it! http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977512614
1 T butter
1 carrot, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 cup diced ham
2 potatoes, peeled and diced
2 cups split peas, rinsed
salt and pepper to taste
6 cups chicken broth
Heat a large frying pan over medium heat. Add butter. Stir in carrot and onion, cooking til softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in ham and potato, cooking another few minutes. Stir in peas and salt and pepper and mix well.
Add pea mixture to slow cooker on high heat. Add broth; stir and cook 4 hours.
I served the soup with saltines and a couple slices of the bread.
The recipe for the bread can be found here: http://www.gather.com/sharePosts.action?articleId=281474977515627

Thanks all!
The funny thing is, until you start cooking, you never understand some of the phrases your elders use - my grandmother always talked about soup that "sticks to your ribs" (this being a good example). But once you've cooked something this hearty, you know what she meant...
Katrina, I racked my brain to come up with some new herb to add. Thyme would've worked...
