Tomato Recall Update

I posted a recipe the other day calling for tomatoes (along with arugala and pasta) and Anne asked about tomato safety.  I found a good update on the topic on the FDA site, I encourage you to review it.  There's a long list of places where the tomatoes are OK still.  In addition, according to the FDA, "Types of tomatoes not linked to any illnesses are cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and tomatoes with the vine still attached."  I used grape tomatoes for my recipe.

Thanks. I stopped buying tomatoes even before this. The costs are terrible and they don't taste that good. I still have canned tomatoes from my garden. I can't wait for this year's crop to produce.

I don't buy them too much either JF for similar reasons. Unfortunately I don't grow my own at this point, but mostly buy them when they are freshly harvested locally. Occasionally though I pick up some grape tomatoes as they seem to be pretty good at other times of year.

it mustve been subconsious that this time, when buying tomatoes, I got the ones bunched wiht the vine. i like that kind better, and i was shopping with hubby who Always gos for the kind that was just recalled.

Thanks for the follow-up, David. I follow the advice of my produce manager and also make use of locally grown tomatoes. Issues like this will hopefully help turn the tide away from mass production and back to support of local farmer's markets, coops and CSAs.

When we have our own home grown tomatoes around August, we will know that those are safe. (Unless the dog lifted his leg on them!)

Yeah we went and bought tomatoes off a vine today. Scary stuff that salmonella killed a cancer patient from tomatoes.

I just heard that they added Florida to the non-safe states. I'm so glad my own tomatoes are ripe.

I read this somewhere last weekend and was surprised that it took so many days to become "NEWS" - I bought cherry tomatos Sunday morning because of it. Thanks for the follow up.

Well, our tomatoes seem to be safe.

I agree with Donna - we need to take a good hard look at what we do to all our food, and get back to locally grown and sold stuff...
