Are you keeping it bold through the Heat?
Summer escorts in warm temperatures and we bring out the picnic baskets and the barbie.
A sublime time for us to enjoy wine, right?
For some Americans, a barbecue means it’s beer time and may not think wine when they fire up the grill for that holiday escape. What a shame! Wine can be the perfect accompaniment to a summertime barbecue or picnic. The only impending problem is the choice – bold or refreshing, red or white?Â
While many take to the refreshing qualities of a crisp Sauvignon Blanc or a fruity Pinot Grigio during the heat of summer months – the bold power of a red may be put on the backburner. This could be a sipping mistake when we’re talking grilled meats and smoky flavors of the barbeque. A young, bold, and fruity red wine, such as Zinfandel or Syrah can find great foil in most meals around the flame. Full and juicy varietals can complement anything coated in barbeque sauce, with its smoky, spicy, and typically sweet flavors. If you can’t take the heat, maybe a slightly chilled Beaujolais or Cotes du Rhone is a more suitable option.
The last thing we want during the summer months is to limit our sipping styles. So, out with any rule book and in with the freedom to improvise and have fun. After all, that’s what summer is about: fun, freedom, and, of course - wine.
Rules or not, we all have our own sipping styles. What is yours? While I am a bold believer in the red - who out there can debate the other side?
What wine do you sip around the summer’s open flame?

I'll have to argue the Zinfandel yet for anything marinated - encrusted fish especially.
I think it's light enough to not feel overwhelming during the summer, but full enough to pair nicely with grilled foods.
Try it out!
